Artist Statement:
During the process of drawing/painting, I noticed the transformation of objects under the change of time and space. I therefore marked down different lines in different time segments in my pieces and allowed time to participate in the realistic yet abstract process of line transformation. The still composition then becomes malleable, moving, and lively.
Each pen/brush mark and hand gesture during art making appears to be simple, and yet these simple movements layer up and become the entirety of the pieces, which are complex. This additive process becomes a portrayal of the condition of life. It is also the representation of the trivial and repetitive occurrences in our daily activities.
The formation of mundane is a work not unlike breathing. It is the process of life opening itself up and developing intricate relationships with the surrounding world. This process utilizes the smallest amount of energy and the tiniest connection points to allow the discovery of the way of life. It touches on the reality of materials as well as worldliness: it touches on merely the sense of “blankness.” I let time and myself go in this laborious process of making.
It is important for one’s artistic development to travel a globalized world in which time and space are condensed in a fast pace. Traveling brings about impacts from foreign cultures as well as change in living experiences and viewpoints. These changes, when applied into artworks, become languages for cultural communication. I would like to thank the Ministry of Culture for opening up the different cultural windows, allowing artists to see different cultural landscapes and, in turn, enrich our own cultures.
I have been making traditional ink paintings since 2004. My residency at Cité International des Arts in the first half of 2012 brought about great impact for me. I distanced myself from the living and making habits that I was most familiar with. More powerful and lively works were created from the visual experiences gained in a foreign culture.
