Zhengbin Harbor Museum of Art “Eternal Day” (hereinafter ZHMA) was founded in 2021 by the young team Xingbinshan Co-Creation Studio, which has long been rooted in Zhengbin Fishing Harbor, Keelung. By integrating art, education, and local stories, ZHMA builds a place-based, wall-less museum along the harbor. Starting from the idea of the “port,” it enables artistic creation to excavate stories more deeply and sustainably; helps people reconnect with the land; and, with sustainability as its goal, works with the neighborhood to cultivate a shared, thriving way of life. It forms a sustainable corridor that connects local shops, travelers, artists, and residents.
On the second floor of SPACE MOOR, where ZHMA is located, there is one bunk-bed area with at least eight individual single beds in small cabin-style bunks. The space is mixed-gender. Facilities provided include utilities, internet, a washer/dryer (wash–dry–spin), microwave, oven, air conditioning/heating, dehumidifier, refrigerator, sink, and a four-seat table and chairs.
Every two years, ZHMA holds an art festival from August to November. At the beginning of each year, it launches a funded residency open call, a time-limited, competitive selection program. All media are welcome, but proposals must align with the festival’s annual theme for on-site creation. The amount of production funding is based on that year’s official announcement. ZHMA also provides surrounding local resources, marketing and promotion, a co-working space, accommodation, and exhibition opportunities (including matchmaking with nearby harbor shops as exhibition venues). In addition, ZHMA accepts rolling weekday applications on a self-funded basis: artists may apply anytime and applications are received on an ongoing basis. Creative content is not limited to Keelung-related topics. Artists may also apply to use the exhibition space on the first floor of SPACE MOOR and independently plan and present an exhibition.
ZHMA is located at Keelung’s well-known tourist spot, the “Colorful Houses.” Nearby are the century-old Zhengbin Fishing Harbor and the former Zhengbin Fishermen’s Association building, offering first-hand access to the fishing-harbor industry. Next to it is Heping Island, Taiwan’s closest offshore island, featuring the distinctive Heping Island Geopark, as well as a Wangye Temple known for its sea procession traditions. Other arts and exhibition spaces in central Keelung, such as Zai Hebian and Rooftop Art Studio, also provide opportunities for exchange.
Zhengbin Fishing Harbor, on the Northeast Coast, has been a historical crossroads of many ethnic groups and cultures, including Han Chinese, Indigenous peoples, Spaniards, Japanese, Koreans, and others. ZHMA collects oral histories from the community and builds a local memory database to preserve harbor culture and artisan skills. Drawing on this local knowledge, ZHMA facilitates co-creation between artists and local schools and develops in-depth arts curricula, helping students rediscover their own land while gaining greater capacity to influence their hometown. ZHMA has also pioneered a large-area, locally collaborative exhibition model: by partnering with multiple local businesses, it extends exhibition spaces throughout the entire fishing harbor, creating a sustainable corridor that links shops, travelers, artists, and residents.
