Founded in 2010, Space118 provides studios and residencies on a short-term basis (1 month) to artists as part of its commitment to supporting emerging art practitioners from all parts of the country and the world. The Space is looking at a diverse group of artists working in the studios to create a lively, supportive and dynamic working environment, aiming to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst artists who work across different fields of art.

Located in the heart of industrial Mumbai, in a warehousing compound, a 15-minute drive from Kala Ghoda and the art district in Colaba, artists have the freedom to experience the rich art and cultural scene of Mumbai.

Space 118 provides the opportunity for artists to interact with a range of institutions (scientific, industrial and cultural) based in Mumbai or to use their studio as an engagement with the city in order to build a sustainable art ecosystem in India.

Meanwhile, Space 118 devotes to educate and expose emerging visual arts practitioners, to provide opportunities to those who have limited access to exchange programs. Helping emerging artists to find a solid yet sophisticated voice, building the network with fellow artists, enthusiasts and the art fraternity of Mumbai and facilitating mentorship and guidance programs for the artists through Visiting Mentors initiative.

Space 118 has hosted over 350 artists from 20 countries, such as, India, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Iran, and Germany…etc. over a period of 10 years.

Space 118 resumes two specific programs- Space118 Fine Arts grant and Space118 Contemporaries program when they are COVID-19 free.

SPACE118 FINE ART GRANT
The Grant will be provided to only ONE selected artist for an eight-week residency. This would include a production grant of up to one lakh rupees along with travel and accommodation. The recipient also gets an eight-week exhibition, which is scheduled during the Mumbai Gallery Weekend in Mumbai.
Space118 supports and facilitates the professional development of cultural practitioners at all levels of their career, providing residents with a platform to incubate their ideas and showcase them to their international peers and the general public.
This will be one of the pioneering programs in the roster, functioning as a unique residency model that closely curates artists at the start of their professional careers, including artists’ visits and curated exhibition walkthroughs for the winner to have a gamut of art-related experiences and exposure. Further, to provide infrastructure, inspiration and mentorship to emerging artists and art practices.
