Led by an experienced hyogu mounter from a century-old mounting studio in Osaka, participants will complete mounting their own kakejiku while learning about the materials, traditional formats, techniques, and aesthetic principles of hyogu.
The program brings together hyogu and cultural heritage conservation professionals, artists, and craftspeople through lectures, workshops, and curated field trips. Participants will visit studios and cultural sites, experience Nara’s traditions of handmade washi paper and sumi ink, and gain broader insight into the craftsmanship connected to hyogu.
Beyond technical skills, the residency invites participants to consider the relationship between mounting and artwork, and how hyogu may inform their future artworks, personal projects, or appreciation of art.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Build an understanding of Japanese hyogu through its history, philosophy, traditional formats, and aesthetic principles.
• Practice the traditional mounting process of kakejiku hanging scrolls with direct guidance from a professional hyogu mounter - possible with personal artworks.
• Take home a set of artisan-grade hyogu mounting tools for your long-term practice.
• Full English-Japanese interpretation support throughout all lessons and an exclusive English Hyogu Handbook.
• Live in a tranquil 18th-century registered national cultural property or the renovated annex building in the heart of historic Nara.
