Makotaay Eco Art Village
|
The Makotaay Eco Art Village began holding the Makotaay Artists’ Workshop in 2020. To date, over 60 artists have participated in these residencies, connecting five local Indigenous communities.
In 2025, we received the "Gift from the Ocean." For the 2026 Residency, we take a step further to ask: "What is the Ocean Thinking?"
The inspiration comes from the late leader of the Makotaay — Kakitaan Lekal Makor. During his lifetime, Lekal Makor lived a pure Pangcah (Amis) life. Rain or shine, he would gaze at the sea every morning and say:
"I look at the ocean every morning and wonder, what is the ocean thinking today?"
This statement not only expresses his reverence for the ocean but also harbors a profound philosophy of coexistence. In his eyes, the ocean is not a resource or a background, but a living entity with spiritual integrity.
In modern society, how do people face the ocean as our understanding and ways of interacting with it have changed? We sincerely invite artists to come to the village and rediscover their primal sensitivity to the environment. Through physical senses—smelling the breath of the sea and listening to the whispers of the wind—engage in a 15-day dialogue with the ocean. Use your creativity to respond: What is the ocean thinking?
