The Town of Taiping (Tsan-Zi-Liao) community, where we are based, is located on the western hillside of Keelung Harbor.
Tsan Zi Liao (tsan-á liâu) is a harbor-adjacent settlement and one of Keelung’s earliest developed areas. The term " Tsan-Zi (tsan-á)" comes from the Taiwanese Hokkien word for "fishing net," referencing the fishermen who once lived here and hung their nets to dry, giving the area its name. As time passed and harbor construction progressed, Tsan Zi Liao came to serve as a safe harbor for hardworking dock laborers who settled in Keelung. The community’s architecture and residents, shaped by the terrain and proximity to the sea, have together embodied a rich local maritime memory.
In 2025, TaiPing Art Hub is launching its Open Call for Arts Residency under the theme “Maritime Memories.” We invite artists to reside in the community, explore its unique characteristics and historical narratives, and engage with residents through artistic creation. Artists will co-create a new chapter of maritime memories for the Town of Taiping (Tsan Zi Liao) community. The outcomes of the residency may also be developed into exhibitions or products themed around local culture. Through this process, artists will contribute both to community revitalization and the creation of site-specific cultural memory.
