Yuchi Hsiao
Yuchi Hsiao graduated from the Graduate Institute of New Media Art at Taipei National University of the Arts. The artist currently works in video, textile, and installation. Through her practice, she reflects on the relationship between people and their surroundings, observing traces of human life while attending to the subtle and unusual moments in everyday life. Lately, Hsiao has been drawing inspiration from the room she spends the most time in, using it as a starting point for her work. She often explores the relationship between the body and its environment, with a particular interest in thoughts, behavioral impulses, and how internal actions manifest in artworks and their dialogue with the external world. Hsiao’s works unfold as her thoughts drift and evolve.

Most of the resident artists at Hangar are locally based, joining either a 2-year long-term or a 6-month mid-term residency. Hangar also runs international residency exchanges, such as the partnership with Taiwan. Moreover, in September and October annually, artists from Stuttgart and Barcelona arrive as part of other exchange programs. Since our residency periods fully overlapped, I was able to build close connections with several of them, and we eventually presented Paratext N.72 together near the end of our stay. The mid- and long-term residents mostly focused on their own projects. Since September and October are also the most active months in Barcelona’s art scene, I took the opportunity to attend their exhibitions and performances, which offered insights into their artistic languages and ways of thinking.
Finally, Hangar provides basic equipment and technical support for residents. Most of the events organized on-site are free to join, though artists are expected to take initiative in asking about and signing up for them.
1 to 2 weeks after arriving at Hangar, I participated in Hangar Obert, an open studio event that is part of Barcelona’s city-wide art weekend. Over this weekend, curators, artists, and members of the public visited the studios intensively. This offered a valuable opportunity to experience Barcelona’s contemporary art scene through a series of exhibitions and performances. Later on, I was invited to take part in the Asian Artists Livingroom series at the Barcelona Design Week. There, I presented a video The Endless Thoughts of Spreading.
As part of Paratext, the final presentation program organized by residency, I gave a lecture performance exploring interactions between light and shadow through video and text. After returning to Taiwan, I expanded this presentation into In This Moment, which was later exhibited.
