During the residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts, I presented the La Planète series at the open studio day. The work reflects on how global systems, though seemingly stable, can collapse instantly due to a single factor, such as a virus. When people enter a state of ideological uncertainty, they are compelled to view the world from a “suspended” angle, in which universal values and shared perceptions constantly collapse and reshape. The installation features images of animals as metaphors for individuals or communities, along with arrangements of found objects. These elements address issues such as linguistic distortion, physical movement, the circulation of scent, blurred class distinctions, paradigm shifts, and transplanted ecologies. Through this, the artwork reflects on the ways we relate to one another and to nature and, eventually, the kind of world humanity might truly need.
Only by being physically present can one truly perceive their place in the world. As a research-driven image-maker, I strive to explore the intersection between academic inquiry and creative practice, while reflecting on how these relate to the dynamics of the international art market. More precisely, what I see is how a city, a people, and their cultural identity examine their unique value through the lens of “history.” That is, how they recognize what sets them apart, while also embracing external influences. Their strength lies in connecting these qualities across generations, without relying on binaries or taking sides. Clarity does not come from rejecting the deeds of a few, which might appear narrow. Rather, we may extend our understanding through art, from personal freedom to national identity. Photography is my primary lens and medium, which I use to learn about each era. Through observations of the interweaving of photography with social media, I hope to reveal a broader framework for future generations to come.
During this 6-month residency, the observations and local visits I made created a meaningful period for focused research and quiet reflection, despite limited time and resources.
