HU hui-chin obtained her MFA in Ceramics from the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts, Taiwan. She has exhibited at Fugui-Yingge Gallery, Taipei, Taiwan, Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, Modern Art Gallery, Taichung, Taiwan, the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China, and etc. She was the resident artist at the Yingge Ceramics Museum, the European Ceramic Workcentre, Art Site of Chiayi Railway Warehouse, and etc.




Artist Statement

We cannot progress with a reclusive heart and mind, living on the isolated island of Taiwan. I would like to thank the Council for Cultural Affairs for assisting artists and art professionals in Taiwan to step out of the country and see the world.

I gained a lot from my two-month residency experience granted from the Council for Cultural Affairs in Taiwan. I participated in a one-month residency program (including 2 workshops) at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, USA and traveled in New York City for one month. My time abroad was a great opportunity to reach a deeper understanding of my own culture, as well as Western cultures .

Anderson Ranch Arts Center demonstrated a high-level of professionalism through the workshops designed for the participants. The Director worked closely with the workshop instructors and assistants to create a smooth studio system. This mode of operation is worth modeling by Taiwanese art organizations. It would not only contribute to the development of the arts, but it would also promote the importance of art education in a sustainable way.

I was most surprised by the diversity of participants at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Different workshops included medical doctors, retirees, office workers, aromatherapists, metalsmiths, teachers, and housewives. Everyone was all over forty years old and had his or her own unique ways of interpreting art. Similar workshops in Taiwan are not as diverse and instead generally consist of teachers or students that graduated with art-related majors. Through this comparison, it is obvious that the United States is more successful in the popularization of its art education, whereas the distant relationship between art and the public can be improved in Taiwan.
