《From the Third Shore》Stefanie Leung Artist-in-Residence Presentation

If history could be rewritten, what stories might emerge about the women whose names were never recorded? Within the family histories we know, how many women’s names, memories, and life stories have quietly faded with time?

This October, TESA international artist-in-residence Stefanie Leung arrives at Tzu Lung Artist House on Taiwan’s north coast. Through art, she reimagines these unrecorded histories, embarking on an exploration of women, memory, and cultural heritage.

*From the Third Shore* is Stefanie’s first exhibition project to combine speculative fiction and magical realism. Drawing on her own family lineage, she creates a fictional historical archive, piecing together women’s life stories through a series of objects that appear to come from the past.

These objects embody everyday acts of gathering, care, nourishment, and the passing down of traditions, bringing overlooked women’s experiences back into view within family and cultural memory. Inspired also by Lo Ting, a mythical figure from Hong Kong, the project opens an imaginative “third space” between fact and fiction, past and present. Here, history has more than one version, while identity and culture remain open to interpretation. Perhaps these unrecorded stories are waiting for us to listen anew.
