2026 East Coast Land Arts Festival: The Body Is the Ocean

The ocean is the origin of all life on Earth and the place to which life ultimately returns. It holds the collective memory of countless forms of life that have evolved over billions of years since the formation of the planet. Our sweat, tears, and blood are all salty, just like seawater. Even the proportions of mineral ions such as sodium, potassium, and calcium in our blood are remarkably similar to those found in seawater. In this sense, each human body can be seen as a small ocean. The memory of the ocean is encoded in our genes and flows through our blood.

This year, join us in exploring the oceanic memories that we have gradually forgotten throughout our long history of land-based civilization through the festival’s inspiring performances and interpretations. Together, let us rediscover the intrinsic connection between people, islands, and the ocean.
