King Car Cultural Salon: Lin Chih-Yu, Founder of Weed Day — The Story Behind A Survey of Taiwan’s Famine-Relief Weeds
2026/06/26
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Taiwanese contemporary foraging art collective Weed Day has launched *A Survey of Taiwan’s Famine-Relief Weeds*, a contemporary foraging atlas that uses plants as a point of departure to revisit historical experiences of survival.
The atlas serves as a resilient guide to famine foodways. It not only surveys the ecology of weeds in the present day, but also responds to Taiwan’s long local history. Inspired by *An Illustrated Survey of Edible Wild Plants in Taiwan* from the Japanese colonial period, the atlas reflects a time when people in Taiwan sought ways to survive through the land and wild plants amid wartime food shortages.
Starting from the creation of this atlas, the lecture will extend to the historical and research contexts of *An Illustrated Survey of Edible Wild Plants in Taiwan* and the Taiwan Botanical Enthusiasts Association during the Japanese colonial period. Through plant observation, the talk will explore land, history, and civic awareness, opening up dialogue across multiple perspectives.
