Shiu Jui-Tsz Solo Exhibition: Territory of Self
2025/02/09

Jui-Tsz Shiu, born in Tainan in 1995 and currently based in Taipei, graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of the Arts and obtained her Master’s degree in Art from the Frank Mohr Institute in the Netherlands. Her work primarily employs mixed media, installations, and video to explore how migrants reimagine and embody their spatial experiences and memories during the relocation process. Recently, she has focused on the relationship between the individual body and the surrounding material environment, seeking to find the position within working and production processes while adopting various strategies to negotiate boundaries and identity.
⭓ Exhibition Introduction
"Territory of Self" examines how transnational migrants establish their sense of self through their relationship with the surrounding material environment and imagine their position during the work. Inspired by the artist's experience working part-time in a restaurant in the Netherlands, the exhibition portrays the kitchen sink as a metaphor for territory and boundaries, while utensils symbolize chess pieces. The process of work is likened to constant probing and adjustment, exploring and attempting to construct a territory of self through repetitive motions.
By drawing associations between kitchen objects and games, the exhibition recreates the helplessness and aspirations experienced by migrants during the process of identity formation, as well as how they negotiate boundaries and identity in hybrid and complex spaces.
