AIR Taipei. Take it, or not to take it?
2024/08/14
"AIR Taipei" stands for "Artist-in-Residence Taipei," a part of Taipei City Government's cultural policies. In 2004, Taipei Cultural Foundation was entrusted by Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs to manage Taipei Artist Village and promote artist exchanges according to the official guidelines. In 2010, the Department of AIR officially launched AIR Taipei, aiming to invigorate urban spaces and create a new city atmosphere through arts residencies.
This exhibition focuses on the historical context of AIR Taipei. It uses spatial divisions across three exhibition rooms to segment the narrative into past, present and future, showcasing AIR Taipei's development trajectory and exploring the relationship between art and the city. For instance, Exhibition Room No. 13 represents the past and focuses on policy development, supplemented with explanations of the mechanisms of arts residencies. Exhibition Room No. 11 represents the present of AIR Taipei, transforming the space into artists’ studios and revealing AIR Taipei’s on-site scenes over the years. Exhibition Room No. 9, on the other hand, is centered on the future, featuring various interactive installations that invite visitors to envision the potential possibilities of AIR Taipei.
Each exhibition room tells a different story according to the historical segment it represents, while continuing the exhibition’s wordplay title to engage in dialogue with visitors. It guides them to observe the changes in the city from the perspective of cultural policies, reinterpreting the relationship between life and art.
