Project Introduction|
-Urban rhythms by Lauris Vitolins

Through "Urban Rhythms," Lauris aims to immerse the audience in the dynamic and multifaceted sound landscape of the neighborhoods around pier-2, creating a deeper research for the everyday sounds that often go unnoticed. The interactive installation invites participants to explore the connections between local materials(abandoned furnitures on the streets), sounds, and their own experiences, encouraging them to reflect on the complex texture of urban life.

-Spinning step by spiral stairs by Ching-Yu Cheng

The space for artists to stay during the Pier-2 artist in residence program features a spiral staircase that connects living space with the studio. The usual horizontal movement where distressed creative thoughts used to oscillate within the confines of a room on one level has transformed into a continuous vertical motion through this spiral staircase.

The experience of traversing the spiral staircase day by day provides a unique perspective on indoor movement (hiking). The act of ascending or descending in circular steps offers a connection to different spaces, and the actions under this spatial context while the times has dissected by the steps, start to intertwine with the gradual development of Ching-Yu’s creative processes.

The 14 steps of spiral staircase deconstructed into 14 plywood pieces, is equipped with wheels and can independently rotate on the same level as a completed circle. Following the order given by the spiral staircase, sitting within everyday, I draw on the plywood pieces placed on the stairs. The action of moving step by step (in terms of physic stair’s footstep and procedure under timelines) serves as a form of drawing practice based on experiences in time and space.
