Taipei Artist Village has been in operation for over 20 years. For the public, it is a place for pausing when walking in the city. For artists, it provides companionship and caregiving during art residencies. For creatives, it is a stage that births artworks and performances. From the holistic perspective of the city, it is a lively ecological network with new events, changes, and movements in each moment and corner.
If you inspect the ever changing organic entity that is Taipei Artist Village, you will see that artists are like stars, scattered within, outwardly forming collaborative lines that further weave into networks, expanding outward with artists as the dot, line, and plane. The artist village can also be seen as a dot, connecting the entire city, even the world. After two decades, the artist village has become a three-dimensional form bearing the memories of the past and future, rich with the depth of history.
Art residencies are dynamic relationships that are also undefined. It depends on how the space is sensed by artists and how they expand as ways of knowing the world. Aligning with the same context, texts and book pages are also singular units that layer and accumulate. In writing, “punctuation marks” are interwoven in the texts, small and unassuming but shouldering the responsibility of making known the state and connections of the content. The forms and functions of punctuation marks also clarify the connections between the people, space, and the city.
A comma is a “dot” that pulls sentences together and signifies a pause. Apart from providing places of pause for art residencies both domestically and abroad, the artist village also provides nourishment for artists amid their brief local experiences and ensures that they continue to their next projects; it is also an intermediary for artistic networks, connecting collaborations.
The period is a full circle but also a “plane.” After the time spent in residencies, artists construct a comprehensive network, complete field research, and create works. Here, a period marks a perfect closure, but not the end. It is more like a conclusion of a particular phase, ready to start a new beginning and embark on a new journey.
A dash is a less-common punctuation mark mainly used to add to previous remarks or mark a turn in the tone. The dash, written as a line stretching from left to right, emphasizes the moving and ongoing link of resources in the artist village. Where will this line lead us to? For creatives, the artist village, or the city, it is a journey that started with art residencies and progresses into the unknown.
As the last step of the trilogy, the 2023 TAV ART PROJECT TRILOGY: TURNING harnesses the form and functions of punctuation marks as similes for the various interactions between the people and spaces of art residencies. The project consists of solo exhibitions / art projects: Chou Shu-Yi continues with the past site-specific work and invites art professionals to explore the spaces through the body and document the vanishing of the artist village. Lai Jiun-Ting experiments with enhancing human cognition through interactive electric sensory installations in the exhibition space and develops a unique cyborg worldview, reflecting on the essence and materiality of existence. Through the corporeality of roaming throughout the city and detailed observations of the surroundings, Chen I-Hsuen documents the spaces surrounding Taipei Artist Village that exist in the ambiguous states of being public and private.
The comma, period, and dash play crucial roles in sentences, much like the dots, lines, and places in space, acting like a metaphor for the interaction between people and space. The physical manifestation of Taipei Artist Village is a vehicle for the stationing of art, while artists and artworks are its soul. Even if the physical embodiment disappears, the artist village still holds an irreplaceable place in the hearts of the people, and its legacy goes on in the next location.
