FARM STUDIO – contemporary art practices in the rural community
FARM Studio, a non-profit organization, grew out of the rural-based Sowing Seeds Art Project. It was founded to realize the creative potential of exchange, dialogue, and collaboration between Indian rural artists, artisans, and international contemporary artists. Locally, Farm Studio promotes and celebrates community artistic and cultural identity and supports community-based activities.
FARM Studio International Artist Residency aims to provide a rural, community-based open platform where creativity can unfold. Residents stay and create a unique atmosphere and entirely new environment where they can develop their artwork free from accustomed distractions.
Farm Studio is an open environment. Though extremely tranquil, life abounds! Artists can expect to meet neighbours, speaking Marwari and Hindi, farmers, tractors, children, animals, and other visitors during the residency at Farm Studio. Relationships form between the artists coming from different geographical locations and varied social, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Here, collaboration and experimentation are encouraged. Many exciting exchanges and dialogues among artists take place. Farm Studio also promotes and celebrates the local community’s artistic and cultural identity while also introducing the art and culture of others (Indian and International guests) back to the community. This intercultural exchange broadens everyone’s experiences and fosters art appreciation.
For the past five years, artists have participated in the residency project from France, Germany, Canada, USA, India, Dominican Republic, UK, Guatemala, Mexico, Poland, Egypt, Italy, Japan, and Thailand.
The length of one residency session is approximately one month.
Artists of all disciplines creating in any media are welcome to apply: dance, theatre, music, sound, performance art, writing, painting, drawing, printmaking, textiles, culinary, photography, video/film, animation, architecture, sculpture (any material), ceramics, mixed-media / multi-media, interdisciplinary, installation, and other new/alternative media. Open to emerging, established artists and collaborative projects. Researchers, curators, and art critics are also welcomed to apply.
As an independent residency organization, Farm Studio cannot yet provide any funding or stipends for travel to the residency program. Artists are encouraged to apply for funding from their own cultural agencies. Farm Studio will acknowledge funding and sponsorship in its publicity, including online and print materials, posters, catalogs, etc. In collaboration with Hinge Arts Projects, Farm Studio does sponsor several artists per year to have a free stay and artist residency at Farm Studio. Artists are welcome to apply for their sponsorship.
