Surfy Space
|
Surfy Space is a residency platform designed for both living and artistic production, located near Luodong Night Market and the train station. The residency provides artists with the opportunity to work within the rhythm of a local town while engaging with a broader international art network.
The program welcomes artists, curators, and researchers from around the world to undertake an 8-week residency between March and October 2027.
Through Surfy Space in Yilan and the Zhongshan Institute of Techno-Art (ZITA) in Taipei, Hyper Wave connects immersive artistic production with urban cultural exchange.
Eligibility:
.Open to individuals or teams (max. 2 people) due to space limitations. Team members cannot be changed after application submission. Funding support remains the same regardless.
.Applicants must have at least three years of experience in artistic creation, curatorial work, or research and not be a currently enrolled student (except for PhD candidates).
.Applicants should be able to articulate how the residency will contribute to their artistic or research development.
.Be free from professional commitments for the duration of the stay.
.Residents must submit residency report (in Chinese or English)
.Family-friendly: Residents may bring family members, but this must be specified in the application. Funding support remains the same regardless of accompanying family members.
.No restrictions on artistic or research themes.

| Provided by Host | .Accommodation: Private bedroom, with a shared studio, kitchen and bathroom with another resident. .Creation space: Indoor workspace and semi-outdoor balcony suitable for materials experimentation .Daily Stipend: NTD 800 per day during the residency period. Travel Support: .International applicants: Flight reimbursement up to NTD 25,000. .Domestic applicants: Reimbursement for one round-trip public transportation to and from Surfy Space. Presentation & Exchange Space: Available in Luodong or Taipei for exhibitions, performances, or cultural exchanges, coordinated with the residency team. .Networking Support: Opportunities for collaborations with other local cultural institutions. |

| Selection Procedure | An open selection panel comprising 2-3 art professionals will evaluate the applications based on originality, relevance, and feasibility. Panel members must maintain objectivity and transparency and cannot review applications with personal conflicts of interest. The final residency selection will be based on scheduling availability, and a waitlist will be maintained if necessary. |
| Expected Outcome | Residency Requirements: .Projects do not need to be site-specific but engagement with the local context is encouraged. .At least one public event during the residency (exhibition, talk, performance, etc.) at Surfy Space (Luodong) or Zhongshan Institute of Techno-Art (Taipei) .Optional participation in Hyper Wave's annual group exhibition, with additional production support depending on project scope .Residents must stay for at least 75% of their approved residency period .Any concurrent projects or commitments must be disclosed before residency begins. |
