In his poetry collection Two Billion Light-Years of Solitude, the Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa writes from the perspective of a poet situated in the universe. The “two billion light-years” in the title refers to humanity’s perception of the vastness of the cosmos, while also evoking an immense imagination of time. Tanikawa’s conception of time expresses its boundlessness and solitude in relation to human existence—the interplay between the instant and the eternal, between life and disappearance. Time is at once expansive and immeasurable, yet intimately intertwined with lived experience. It is not merely a physical unit of measurement, but a condition of being—a sensation of life that cannot be fully
articulated.
In a contemporary context, time is no longer understood solely as a linear progression. It can be folded, revisited, and reassembled. Human experience, likewise, is no longer interpreted through a single narrative or record, but articulated through fragments, leaps, and reconstructions. Time may therefore become a scene that can be observed, arranged, and re-created.
“Time × Narrative” seeks to explore both individual and collective experiences of time, and to consider how these experiences unfold through multiple forms of storytelling. Such narratives encompass transformations of people and cities, the circulation of collective memory, and the relationship between perception and everyday life. They also gesture toward connections between past and future, the
known and the unknown—toward imaginations that continuously cycle and return.
Rather than proposing a singular or definitive understanding of time, “Time × Narrative” enters into time’s multiple spectrums, repositioning one’s sense of existence within them. As narratives are reopened, time is allowed to flow in different ways, enabling us to reexamine our own temporal trajectories and our connections with the external world and with others.
