WANG Chi Sui, born in Taitung in 1975, got her PhD’s degree in Fine Arts from Newcastle University in Britain in 2004. Wang is currently an associate professor in National Taipei University of Arts.


Artists in general possess the capacity to view themselves as well as the environment from a critical and sensitive angle. We understood that life would find its way, and knew for a fact that the disappearance of one phenomenon only meant the birth of yet another. After experiencing the process of being part of a phenomenon as well as transgressing from one phenomenon to the next, however, are we then able to leave some heroic marks on the world?



The point of a trophy or a token for heroism is not about seeking a replacement for a heroic act. It is rather an artistic attempt to explore the possibility within the phenomenon of heroism, to express the relationship between individual characters in the phenomenon, and to understand the connection of the body to the culture of visual art. In the Czech Republic, an ironic heroism had emerged from the country’s complex history in its social, political, and economic environment, and had developed to take many different forms. The Czech people created a variety of ways to entertain and make fun of themselves due to their tragic history of migration. Their vitality has never been dwindled by the political oppression in the past and instead, found its way through their culture and unwavering effort.



I utilized the Czech condition as a reference for my own work and searched for a brief connection with my viewers from the representation process. By granting the images a sense of cultural autonomy and visual awareness, I attempted to define the interpretation as well as the misinterpretation of these images in a particular time and space. A local dialogue was thus established. Fragments of images combined with my diligent forms of expression are able to generate the persistent and time-sensitive process of visual ‘rewind’ and visual ‘recollection’ in the viewers.
