Artist Statement:
During my residency, I aimed to explore the interplay between the corporeal and the subjective through sculpture, video, and performance, with a focus on foot binding and the art of tea.

During this time, a solo exhibition “Dear Future” by artist Ranu Mukherjee took place at the 18th Street Arts Center. This exhibition presented forests as a site of existence, highlighting themes such as biodiversity, non-human agency, indigenous consciousness, and interspecies communication, all of which profoundly inspired me.

Speaking of agency, I created many ceramic pieces. Since the facilities at my residency could not fulfill my needs, I went to the Still Life Studios nearby to work. There, I explored the relationship between ceramic ware and human behavior through clay. When fellow artists visited my studio, I would stage a performance with selected objects at my tea space.

I believe that a group setting is pivotal for an artist’s growth. Thus, as the residency was near an end, I organized an evening party for all the artists and curators I met in Los Angeles. This residency provided me with insights into the city’s artistic ecology. Through this 3-month program, I made quite a few friends, including these artists and curators. This will be truly helpful for my career development and exhibition-planning in Los Angeles in the future.
