Thoughts on Residency Program:

For the first stop of my residency program, I was lucky enough to stay at Brooklyn Artists Studio (BAS)! During this time, I tried to take in as much New York as I could everyday, visiting all corners of New York City, including the galleries in Chelsea, boutique stores in SoHo, the diverse communities in Brooklyn, MoMA and Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, libraries, public art in subway stations, graffiti in the streets, and street art markets during weekends that close down an entire street. I was amazed by the art activities taking place all around the city. New York is a city full of tourists, and for me, also a guest here, it allowed me to see the different images and appearances of people from all parts of the world, and enabled me to examine from a perspective I was fully comfortable with the different behaviors and reactions by those people from different areas when they leave their home countries and face a different culture. It was quite interesting.

Second Stop, “Anderson Ranch Arts Center”, Colorado, USA

Anderson Ranch Arts Center is a well organized and planned art center, the staff and facility provide artists a space where they can focus fully on creative works. Creative materials, facility, and professional assistants allow artists to fully express and explore their ideas. The art center also takes care of details in life so that the artists-in-residence do not have to worry about trivial things in daily life. Moreover, the weekly auction enables residents of neighboring communities to physically experience the process and result of art creation, and gives them the opportunity to approach artworks and artists, and ultimately embrace art. Through events like this, the art center on one hand is able to gain substantial funds, and on the other hand, the artists also get to return the favor for the care they received from the art center. The artists also contribute to the sustainable operation of the place through artwork exchange.
