When I first arrived EKWC in the Netherlands, I found that the refreshments prepared by the center were all packed in plastic containers. I kept the containers after the meal because it has aroused my interest in pondering the relationship between plastic containers and people nowadays. I realized that using plastic containers is a worldwide phenomenon now. Therefore, I paid attention to how people using different plastic containers and came up with three projects: “First Meal Plan,” “Marathon Cup,” and “Dinner Plan.”

I used the plastic packaging of my first meal at EKWC as my material for the "First Meal" project. It was a big challenge to turn unshaped plastic bags into ceramic molds. After trying and learning how to control the material, along with the professional guidance by the ceramic center instructor, I finally completed my work successfully.

The idea of the "Marathon Cup" project came from the time I saw a lot of plastic cups all over the road on a marathon event. It caused me great confusion about people making plastic wastes and harming the environment while pursuing a healthy life. I created two pieces under this topic. One is to present the scattered cups on the ground with ceramics. The ceramic material is fragile, meanwhile light and thin as plastics at the same time. It represents the confusion and conflict that I feel about marathon event. The other work is a tower-like trophy stacked with disposable cups made of ceramic. Ironically, it is a trophy and yet a symbol of used plastic cups at the same time.

“Dinner Plan” is the most anticipated project for me because I plan to make ceramic containers for the artists in EKWC. I noticed that there was lots of plastic packaging left after dinner for 20 people almost every day. I understand it is hard to avoid using disposable containers, so I decided to make non-disposable tableware for the artists. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I could not complete the project before leaving, so I sent the molds back to Taiwan to continue the production and present in Taiwan.

In the last few days of staying in EKWC, I held an Open Studio. In addition to exhibiting the "First Meal Plan" and the "Marathon Cup," I also showed plaster and silicone molds to share my production process with the public.

EKWC is an excellent and professional working center for artists to create. There are experienced technicians to deal with the different needs of the artists. And the resident artists also take care of each other like a family. It has benefited me a lot to live and work with artists from all different backgrounds and professions.
