Artist Statement
Being able to exchange ideas with others that are in the art field was a precious experience during my residency. To me, it was just as important as creating work. ISCP organized many events that induced such exchanges in the hopes of allowing artists to become more familiar with each other, as well as to introduce the Artists-in-Residence to the New York art circle. In addition to an artist salon every two weeks, there were guest critic activities and field trips to museums, galleries, and art communities every month.
Artist salons were held in the exhibition space at ISPC. Two artists determined how they wanted to utilize the 40-minute session that they were given to present their works. Most artists chose slideshows, while others decided to perform live. Each artist salon is open to the public. People from Artists-in-Residence to artists and art lovers from all over New York had the opportunity to gather together to understand an artist and his or her work. The discussion often continued until late at night after each presentation.
I gained the most from the guest critic activities during my residency. This is why I think ISCP is more prestigious than other residency programs. Through the guest critic program, I had the opportunity to meet many important people in the arts and introduce them to my art. The professionals I met included curator Ana Paula, British artist Liam Gilick, PERFORMA curator Tairone Bastien, Stefan Kalmar, owner of Newman Popiashvili Gallery Irena Popiashvili, curator for Abramovic Studio Jovana Stokic, art critic Dan Fox, and gallery owner Elizabeth M. Grady. ISCP is a prestigious art organization in New York, which is why these important art guests accepted the invitation to visit.
ISPC also organized a field trip each month according to the artists’ recommendations. Through the various field trips, I had the opportunity to visit arts institutions in Philadelphia, numerous galleries at the Lower East Side of New York, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Governors Island Studio Program, galleries in Williamsburg, the Noguchi Museum, Socrates Sculpture Park, Art Omi, and Bard College.
