Work Outside the World: A Fictional Dialogue
Fang Yen Hsiang works and lives in Taipei. A curator, art critic, writer and creator, he focuses on interdisciplinary contemporary art practices, the philosophies and aesthetics of technical media, and fictional writing.

Artist Statement:
My project at Cité Internationale des Arts includes 2 themes: new institutionalism and critique, and the development of ecologism. In recent years, art museums and galleries have evolved from spaces primarily for displays to venues that emphasize social and educational functions, capable of fostering social participation and reconstruction. The focal points of this project are queer ecologism, Timothy Morton’s dark ecology, and Tim Ingold’s ecological anthropology.

The title of my resident presentation is: Outside the World: A Fictional Dialogue. Through fiction and speculation, I showcased the various dialogues conducted during the residency, interchangeably displaying images generated through AI interactions with artificial intelligence as a form of “alternative writing.” I also initiated the “2041” cross-border, remote curatorial experiment in Paris, exploring the possibilities of heterogeneous talks, artist communities, and the expansion of interpersonal connections.

During the residency, artists would independently organize various events, such as presentations, releases, performances, workshops, weekend film screenings, and social gatherings. I actively took part in these activities while building a personal artistic archive. This allowed me to obtain valuable field research results. Such an irreplaceable experience can only be achieved through long-term residency and in-depth fieldwork.

Finally, with its long-standing collaboration with Cité Internationale des Arts, Taiwan is in an advantageous position. I recommend that the Ministry of Culture arrange exchange activities with overseas resident artists, either with the assistance of Taiwanese artists or independently, to enhance the effectiveness of the residency program.
